Meet the Trainer – Mike
New Milford, CT
What motivated you to be a personal trainer?
When I was in high school I joined a rowing team. The coach was a German guy with a background in exercise science who performed lactate testing on us to calculate heart rate zones. I was interested in studying exercise science to better train myself for rowing.
What’s your favorite healthy meal?
Salad with Romain lettuce, cucumber, fetta cheese, onion, celery, couscous, shredded carrots, grilled chicken, and balsamic vinaigrette dressing.
Favorite “cheat” meal?
Turf burger at Billy Murphy’s Irish Saloon with fries, and a beer.
What’s one thing you wish everyone who signed up with a personal trainer knew about the process?
It takes consistency and small changes to daily habits that must be maintained.
Favorite exercise?
Barbell squat
How do you keep your clients motivated?
By pointing out progress. When people see how much stronger they are getting or if they’ve lost weight, it’s easier for them to keep pushing because they know the training is working.
What’s the number one thing you see other personal trainers doing wrong when with a client?
Doing overly complicated exercises that are not effective.
When someone finds out you’re a personal trainer, what question do they always ask you?
“How to I lose weight or build muscle?”
What destination is #1 on your bucket list?
Norway
Favorite tv show all time?
Psych
What are some qualities of the best personal trainers?
Empathy, Intelligence, Adaptability.
